This interactive tool allows students to create Venn diagrams that contain two or three overlapping circles, enabling them to organize their information logically.
The Compare & Contrast Map is an interactive graphic organizer that enables students to organize and outline their ideas for different kinds of comparison essays.
This handout will help you first to determine whether a particular assignment is asking for comparison/contrast and then to generate a list of similarities and differences, decide which similarities and differences to focus on, and organize your paper so that it will be clear and effective. It will also explain how you can (and why you should) develop a thesis that goes beyond 8775 Thing A and Thing B are similar in many ways but different in others. 8776
The best practice in any situation will depend on the type of student, the text type being studied, the school system and many other factors. Thus, this article cannot prescribe a system for the teaching of writing that is optimal for all teaching situations. Rather, I hope to describe and contrast two popular, yet very different, approaches and examine how both can be used in the classroom.
If I had a bit more to say about the items I was comparing/contrasting, I might devote a whole paragraph to how each point relates to each item. For example, I might have a whole paragraph about the clientele at Pepper 8767 s, followed by a whole paragraph about the clientele at Amante then I would move on and do two more paragraphs discussing my next point of comparison/contrast—like the ingredients available at each restaurant.
There are certainly many ways to have students compare things and to represent that comparison visually. Even more well-known than the comparison-contrast chart is the Venn Diagram . The Venn diagram is also very useful, as long as we keep in mind that the real value of a Venn is in the DOING of work best when we have students, not teachers, determining what the relevant similarities and differences are between two or three concepts, people, places, or ideas. The website offers several types of comparison-contrast charts and Venn diagrams, which can be downloaded and printed out from the links below.
A process approach
Process approaches to writing tend to focus more on the varied classroom activities which promote the development of language use: brainstorming, group discussion, re-writing. Such an approach can have any number of stages, though a typical sequence of activities could proceed as follows
